Analyzing Message in Information Hacking

This post will consist of my opinion on the message of my rhetorical situation for project 2.

Two Most Relevant Points:
  • Respond to a particular occasion:  The article is at its heart, a response to a specific hacking attack on the United States.  Therefore, that is the primary motivation behind the writing, and also why it is more factual than an opinion piece might be.

  • Analyze, synthesize, or interpret: There are multiple ways that the article does all three of these things, as it covers the events and how it can be addressed.  It interprets many quotes and situations from various viewpoints, and analyzes the possible responses that could or should be taken.
Irrelevant Points:
  • Persuade the audience:  The article, though giving an opinion, does not necessarily try to persuade the audience.  This is because the issue is less of a social issue and more of an internal issue that is expected to be addressed by the federal workers responsible for internet security.  Where it does in some way try to persuade the audience is where it addresses the source of the attack and its implications, but this is not necessarily the main purpose of the article.
  •  Advocate for change:  Though it does make the point that people need to make their networks more secure, it is not calling for change in the traditional sense as it is addressing and analyzing a reality that is inescapable in its current form.
Nuances to the message:
  • The most important nuance to the message is that it gives its analysis from a variety of perspectives, and is not singular in its presentation.  Covering and quoting many different opinions on the many facets of the issue.
