My Discipline

If you didn't already make the educated guess based off of the picture, I am a pre-computer science major. Computer science majors will learn the ins and outs of many aspects of computers, such as programming and some networking, alongside learning what makes computers work the way they do at a highly complex level.

The career outlook for those in the field of study is obviously involved with computers, and typically programming, but with the ever increasing integration of technology, the type of work is potentially quite varied.  However, with its ever increasing popularity and competition, the career outlook is becoming more predominantly coders which are being produced in droves.
I have always had a passion, fascination and connection with computers.  It stemmed from my interest in video games at a young age and grew quickly from there, with me building my own computer and looking into begi.ning to learn to code.  I have always wanted to work with computers from the bottom up, and to fully grasp what happens when the magical box carries out its commands.

Because of its broad applications, there are many leaders in many different aspects of the field.  Apple and Google are top companies when it comes to technology in general, anywhere you look you can find people using the products from these companies.  Leading individuals include SpaceX and PayPal inventor Elon Musk, Microsoft founder Bill Gates, Linux operating system creator Linus Torvalds and many more.

The top journals in the field are: CACM - Communications of The ACM which is published at http://cacm.acm.org/.
Another top journal is Foundations and Trends in Machine Learning published by Now Publishers Inc.  It is based in California.
The last top journal I found is IEEE Transactions on Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence, also based out of the United States, through the publisher IEEE Computer Society.

After reading some of the other posts on their disciplines, I got some assurance on my own opinions, and also some perspective from somebody who has a very different discipline than I.  There was a reasonable amount of variance within my discipline when it comes to the reason for interest especially, and I also saw people who were interested in their other disciplines for reasons much like my own.

  1. I think the computer science is a very interesting field because of the impact of technology on our lives today. I have a brother who is very interested in learning how to code, and from talking to him it sounds like a very intricate and challenging concept. I think it is very cool that you have already built your own computer, I wouldn't even know where to start! My only constructive comment is that the last two of your journals do not have any in-text links.

  2. It's awesome that your pursuing what you really wanted to do from childhood and you have all of my respect for that. I honestly never heard about Computer Sciences as a major until about this summer when I went to orientation and met one and just hearing about what you guys do impresses me! My only comment upon this post is that the journals are not very well explained and a feel a little bit dropped in there.

  4. I love that you are so in to Computer Programming and that you have actually already educated yourself about how to do everything prior to college. Sometimes I think people jump into a major without ever really experiencing it hands on before going and studying it. Definitely means you have less of a chance of having a mid college crisis and switching over to a completely opposite major. Pat on the back. The only question I have is: In the third paragraph, did you state that you have actually built your own computer? If so, holy impressive!
